Indy Point made an impressive U.S. debut at Del Mar July 24, taking down top prize in the Wickerr Stakes.
Ridden by Gary Stevens for trainer Richard Mandella, Indy Point rallied impressively in the stretch to win the Wickerr going away by 1 1/4 lengths. He covered the mile over the turf in 1:32.74 and got the final furlong in less than 12 seconds. The course record is 1:32.10 set by Obviously last summer.
Indy Point, a winner of three Grade 1 races in his native Argentina, is a son of Indygo Shiner. The Wickerr win was his sixth victory in 13 starts. He has never finished worse than third in his career. The $56,580 winner’s share of the purse boosted his earnings to $559,061.
Indy Point finished second in last year’s Gran Premio Carlos Pelligrini, the final leg of Argentina’s Triple Crown, at San Isidro. Below is a link to Indy Point’s game runner-up effort in the Pelligrini.
