Barry Irwin announced through a Facebook post on Wednesday that Team Valor’s Animal Kingdom will return Feb. 9, 2013 in the Gulfstream Park Handicap (G1) at Gulfstream Park.
The race will serve as Animal Kingdom’s lone prep for the $10 million Dubai World Cup (UAE-G1) at Meydan in the United Arab Emirates.
Animal Kingdom, most recently a troubled second in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Mile (G1) for trainer Graham Motion following an eight-month layoff, won a turf race at Gulfstream Park last year before being sidelined while preparing for the 2012 Dubai World Cup.
“I like the timing, the spacing and the surface,” Motion said in a statement issued by Team Valor.
Animal Kingdom, winner of the 2011 Kentucky Derby (G1), is a son of Stonewall Farm Ocala Leroidesanimaux (BRZ). All told, Animal Kingdom has won four of nine starts and banked more than $2.3 million
