Bertrando Colt Tops Barretts October Sale

Arnold Zetcher went to $150,000 to secure the sale-topping Bertrando colt at Tuesday’s Barretts October Sale in Pomona, Calif. Consigned by Willow Tree Farm Inc., the California-bred colt is out of the Tale of the Cat mare Telling Stories.
The second-highest price of the sale was a colt named Steve’s Legacy who sold for $120,000 to Hartley/De Renzo Thoroughbreds . By Unusual Heat, the colt is produced from the Swiss Yodeler mare Helen’s Echo, a sister to Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) winner Thor’s Echo. Steve’s Legacy was consigned by West 12 Ranch, agent.
All told, 174 sold for $4,006, 600 compared to 154 sold last year for $2,599,700. The sale averaged $23,006 compared to $16,881 in 2011. The median price was $18,000; it was $9,750 a year ago. A total of 41 horses did not sell on Tuesday.
