‘Fab 5′ Defeats ‘Legends Team’ at Arlington Park

The “Arlington Fab Five” beat the “Legends Team” in the third annual special Jockey Challenge Race on Friday at Arlington Park.

Led by James Graham, who won the race aboard Jake Wil Gallop, the Fab Five outscored the Legends by a count of 23-16 based on a 12-10-7-6-4 point system.

“It’s brilliant,” said Graham, who has ridden in all three editions of the special race.  “More tracks should do things like this, especially with the proceeds going to great causes (the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund and the Racetrack Chaplaincy of America.

Graham’s 1 3/4-length victory aboard Jake Wil Gallop was worth 12 points while Larry Melancon, representing the Legends Team, earned 10 points for his runner-up finish aboard Dominant Suh.

“I felt good being out there (in a race) especially since I get on three or four horses every morning,” said Melancon, who retired from race riding in July 2010.

Rounding out the top five in the race with their jockey and point totals were Big Bear Hug (Seth Martinez for the Fab Five, seven points); Hungry Wildcat (Zoe Cadman for the Legends Team, six points); and Switching to Glide (Francisco Torres for the Fab Five, four points).

The Jockey Challenge Arlington’s top five riders in wins which included Rosemary Homeister Jr. and Jeffrey Sanchez in addition to those listed above against five retired jockeys including Patti Cooksey, Earlie Fires and Frank Lovato Jr. as well as those listed above.
