Union Rags drew post position No.6 for Saturday’s $1 million Florida Derby (G1) at Gulfstream Park during a draw breakfast at Ten Palms restaurant on the grounds of the racetrack.
Winner of the Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) in his last start, Union Rags has been installed as the 6-5 morning-line favorite for Saturday’s 1 1/8-mile test. The Chadds Ford Stable colorbearer will be ridden by Julien Leparoux for trainer Michael Matz.
“I think he should take a step forward from the Fountain of Youth,” said Matz. “You’re never sure what to expect coming off of a four-month layoff, but it couldn’t have gone any better. I was very pleased. It didn’t look like he had to give everything he had. I would hope that having a race under his belt would help him for the Florida Derby.”
Second choice on the morning line is El Padrino at 2-1. The son of Pulplit drew post No. 8 in the field of nine runners. Javier Castellano rides for trainer Todd Pletcher and owner Let’s Go Stable.
Take Charge Indy is the third choice at odds of 5-1 for trainer Pat Byrne. Calvin Borel is slated to ride the son of A.P. Indy who will break from post no. 3.
The field in post position order is as follows: 1. Fort Loudon (20-1); 2. News Pending (8-1); 3. Take Charge Indy (5-1); 4. Neck N’Neck (20-1); 5. Z Camelot (50-1); 6. Union Rags (6-5); 7. Bartolome (30-1); 8. El Padrino (2-1); 9. Reveron (12-1).
