Champion Groupie Doll on Monday turned in her final breeze in preparation for Aqueduct Racetrack’s Grade 1 Cigar Mile Handicap, traveling four furlongs in 48.55 seconds over Belmont Park’s training track.
With exercise rider Jada Schlenk aboard, Groupie Doll ran the opening quarter-mile in 24.44 seconds and galloped out five furlongs in 1:01.79, according to NYRA clockers.
It was the second of two workouts at Belmont for Groupie Doll, who breezed four furlongs in 48.61 on November 16. The Cigar Mile will be held Saturday, November 30.
“[Schlenk] said that might have been the best she ever worked over that track,” said trainer William “Buff” Bradley. “I said, ‘That’s great,’ so we’re very happy with that, and, as you saw, she had a tough time pulling her up.”
Bradley proclaimed Groupie Doll ready for the 2013 Cigar Mile. She was second by a nose to Stay Thirsty in the 2012 edition of the race.
“I was just telling [groom] Matt [Hebert] the rest of the week is going to be easy,” said Bradley. “We’ll just take her out and just do light work with her, keep her happy. She looked very happy in the work and galloping out. Coming home, she looked happy. As Matt and Jada both said, she’s not blowing very hard.”
In her most recent start, Groupie Doll won a second straight edition of the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint when she prevailed by a half-length on November 2 at Santa Anita Park. The Cigar Mile will be her first start for new owner Mandy Pope, who purchased the 5-year-old for $3.1 million on November 6 at the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale.
