Trainer William “Buff” Bradley added blinkers to Groupie Doll for Thursday’s Vinery Madison Stakes (G1) at Keeneland and the equipment change paid huge dividends.
Under Rajiv Maragh, Groupie Doll moved into contention around the far turn of the seven-furlong test, chasing Whipsaw City (Fr) and race favorite Musical Romance. She inhaled the leaders in the lane and went on to score by three lengths over California shipper She’s Cheeky.
Owned by Fred and Buff Bradley, Carl Hurst and Brent Burns, Groupie Doll covered the seven furlongs in 1:23.76. She has now won five of 12 and earned $488,756. Thursday’s win was her first over Polytrack. She just missed winning last year’s Raven Run Stakes (G2) at Keeneland, losing that seven-furlong event by just a head in a furious finish under Greta Kuntzweiler.
She’s Cheeky turned in a game performance to finish second for trainer Peter Eurton. The 7-year-old mare made a big run at Groupie Doll before settling for the place spot under Robby Albarado.
