The victory earned a spot for In Lingerie in the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic (G1) to be run Nov. 2 at Santa Anita.
Trained by Todd Pletcher, who also won the Spinster in 2007 with Panty Raid, and ridden by John Velazquez, In Lingerie covered the 1 1/8 miles on the main track in 1:49.42.
“We were hopeful (of a winning performance),” said Pletcher. “She ran very well at Saratoga against the best 3-year-old fillies in the country and we knew she liked the Polytrack. We were just hoping that she’d transfer that form from Turfway early on. (At Turfway Park, she won her career debut in January and won the Grade 3 Bourbonette Oaks in March.) We knew she was training well, so we were optimistic.”
The victory, the third in as many starts on Polytrack for In Lingerie, a Keeneland sale graduate, was worth $300,000 and increased her earnings to $712,265 with a record of 7-4-2-1. In Lingerie is a Kentucky-bred daughter of Empire Maker out of the Storm Cat mare Cat Chat.
“She had a perfect trip. She broke really well, so we got into nice position. I was a little worried because the horses in front of me, I was expecting they were going to come back to me. Actually they lasted a little longer than I expected, which did help me a little bit. Once I got out at the sixteenth pole and she was in the clear she responded right away. I’m very proud of her.
“She’s betting better. She’s more mature and relaxed.”
In Lingerie returned $6.80, $3.80 and $3.20. Mystical Star returned mutuels of $5.60 and $4.60 in finishing 2¼ lengths in front of Upperline, who rallied for third under James Graham and paid $5.20 to show.
