In Lingerie proved much the best in the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes (G2) at Pimlico Race Course on Friday.
Owned by Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Gary Barber, In Lingerie stumbled at the start, but gathered herself quickly and settled nicely for John Velazquez.
She moved up outside of runners heading into the far turn as she took aim at pacesetter and race favorite Mamma Kimbo. She rolled past Mamma Kimbo and crossed the wire 1 ¼ lengths in front of rallying stablemate Disposablepleasure. Trainer Todd Pletcher saddled the top two finishers. Wildcat’s Smile finished third and Mamma Kimbo tired to fourth.
In Lingerie is a daughter of Empire Maker.
Pletcher previously won the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes in 2005 with Spun Sugar and 2007 with Panty Raid. Velazquez won this race in 1998 with Added Gold, in 2003 with Roar Emotion and delivered aboard Spun Sugar in 2005.
In Lingerie, who had won the Bourbonette Oaks at Turfway Park in her previous start, completed the nine furlongs in 1:52.07 and paid $9.80.
“That was a big effort to run 1-2 like that. I’m pleasantly happy,” trainer Todd Pletcher said. “We were pretty concerned at the start because one of the things Johnny and I talked about in the paddock was that she might have to make a wide sweep. It took her a little while to settle into stride and Johnny had no choice but to put her out pretty wide on the backside. I thought at the top of the stretch she was in pretty good shape, and she made a strong run in the stretch. I felt pretty comfortable coming to the sixteenth-pole. I think she made a big step forward to be one of the leaders of her division today.”
