Peachtree’s Stable’s Mamma Kimbo likely stamped her ticket to the Kentucky Oaks (G1) with a wire-to-wire score in Wednesday’s Fantasy Stakes (G2) at Oaklawn Park.
The 3-year-old daughter of Discreet Cat won her debut at Santa Anita in impressive fashion in February. The Fantasy was her second lifetime start and her first around two turns. Under jockey Mike Smith, Mamma Kimbo covered the 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.64. She set fractions of :23.43, 46.77 and 1:11.15 before being asked for run in the lane. Amie’s Dimi finished second and Jemima’s Pearl was third.
The winner is conditioned by Bob Baffert, who also sent out the third-place finisher. Baffert reportedly watched the race from California just two weeks after suffering a heart attack in Dubai.
If Mamma Kimbo moves on to the Kentucky Oaks, she will attempt to provide Peachtree Stable with its second consecutive Oaks victory following Plum Pretty’s win in the race last year.
