Popular runner Mucho Macho Man returns to Churchill Downs Friday afternoon in the $300,000 Alysheba Stakes on the Kentucky Oaks undercard.
Contested at 1 1/16 miles, the Alysheba features Reeves Thoroughbred Racing and Dream Team One Racing Stables Mucho Macho Man who will tackle nine rivals in the race, including Successful Dan and Nates Mineshaft.
Trained by Kathy Ritvo, Mucho Macho Man finished third in last year’s Kentucky Derby (G1) the last time he stepped foot on the Churchill track in a race. His courageous run through last year’s Triple Crown earned him a legion of followers.
Bred in Florida by John and Carole Rio, the son of Macho Uno has not disappointed this year. He is undefeated in two starts this season, winning the Sunshine Millions Classic and the Gulfstream Park Handicap (G2) at Gulfstream Park. Ramon Dominguez has the call on the 2-1 favorite in the Alysheba.
Nates Mineshaft, trained by Austin Smith, has won his last four starts by a combined 17 ½ lengths. Included in that streak are scores in the Mineshaft Handicap (G3) and the New Orleans Handicap (G2). Jesse Campbell will ride.
Succeesful Dan recently returned to the races following a 17-month layoff due to an injury and won at Keeneland on April 6. A winner in six of nine lifetime, Successful Dan will have Julien Leparoux in the irons for trainer Charles Lopresti.
The Alysheba, won last year by Florida-bred First Dude, will go as the ninth race Friday with a post time of 3:52 p.m.
