OBS Graduates Clash in Del Mar’s Sorrento Stakes

Florida-bred Stop Smiling, an impressive debut winner at Betfair Hollywood Park in July, returns today in the Sorrento Stakes (G2) at Del Mar.

Stop Smiling

A $130,000 OBS March graduate owned by Mark De Domenico and trainer Jerry Hollendorfer, Stop Smiling notched a smart tally in her first start at Betfair Hollywood Park. She broke a tad slowly from the rail that day, stalked the leaders along the inside to the far turn and moved between runners in the stretch to tag the speed late. The half-sister to multiple Grade 1 winner Weemissfrankie drew post position No. 5 in the compact Sorrento field of seven.

Among Stop Smiling’s rivals is fellow OBS graduate Concave, a $160,000 March sale graduate. Also a winner in her debut, Concave races in the colors of Reddam Racing, is trained by Doug O’Neill and is listed at odds of 3-1. She will be ridden by Mario Gutierrez.

The 5-2 morning line favorite is She’s a Tiger, a sister to Grade 1-winning sprinter Smiling Tiger. The daughter of Tale of the Cat is perfect in two tries and won the Landaluce Stakes at Hollywood in her last start. The bay filly is trained by Jeff Bonde and was a $150,000 Keeneland September graduate last year. Frank Alvarado travels to Del Mar from his Northern California base for the mount.

The Sorrento is carded as the 7th race today.
