For the 14th consecutive year, the Leffler Agency of Baltimore, Tampa and Providence designed the official Preakness logo. The Leffler Agency’s new creative branding division, brandNU Marketing created the logo under the design guidance of senior art director Jeffrey Sewell, a 27-year veteran of the agency.
The 2013 Preakness logo draws on the classic Pimlico logo horse type that is on the side of the clubhouse entrance. That horse combination was inspired by the nineteenth century painting of the “Great Race”, an event which put Pimlico on the national sporting map. The underline “checkerboard” pattern is also classic in that it plays off of the Maryland state flag. Both features and the straightforward typeface translate the venerable nature of the middle jewel of the Triple Crown.
“We at Leffler and brandNU take pride in the diverse styles and practicality that the logos have achieved over the years,” said Bob Leffler, agency president/owner. “They must be bold enough to translate on television, simple enough to serve on credentials and badges and have the dynamism to sell as a feature of apparel.”
