Florida-bred Fog rolled home in front of a promising group of juveniles to win the Del Mar Futurity (G1) at Del Mar on closing day Sept. 5.

Ridden by Rafael Bejarano, Rolling Fog covered the seven furlongs in 1:22.96 and the won the event by 1 ¼ lengths from a fast-closing Know More. The latter was seeking his second stakes win from two career starts, having won the Best Pal Stakes (G2) in his debut. Scherer Magic finished third. Rolling Fog, a son of Posse, is owned by Arnold Zetcher and conditioned by Bob Baffert.

“The instructions to Rafael (Bejarano) were to play the break and if you catch a flier go, and if not just sit with whoever’s on the lead and the best horse will prevail,” said Jim Barnes, Baffert’s assistant trainer. “I called (Bob Baffert) a few minutes ago, but he didn’t answer. He was probably talking to Arnold (owner Arnold Zetcher) on the phone. I’m sure he’s extremely happy.

“This is the race to win. We’re all about Grade 1 (stakes). The Del Mar Futurity has been ours for many years and it will continue to be our race. This horse was ready to run when we left Santa Anita. He was one of our top horses when we left Santa Anita but we got down here and worked him a couple of times and he was struggling with the track a bit. We entered him and he got in, then he ran a low-grade fever and we had to scratch. That was probably the best thing, because then we worked him a couple more times and won the first time out. He just kept improving on this track and he really likes dirt, I know that. Look for better things from him in the future.”

The victory was the 13th stakes win of the summer meet for Bejarano, making him the all-time leader for stakes races won in a season at the seaside oval. Bejarano also was the leading rider of the 2012 meet.
