Union Rags arrived at Churchill Downs on Thursday from Keeneland and turned in a strong 1 ½-mile gallop under the Twin Spires on Friday.
Trained by Michael Matz, who trained Barbaro to win the 2006 Kentucky Derby (G1), Union Rags will be ridden in next Saturday’s Kentucky by Julien Leparoux.
“He’s been amazing.” Matz told Churchill Downs Communications. “The further he goes, the stronger he gets. He’s amazing that way.
“We have one more work and we are going to watch the weather,” he added.“We hope to get a good track and work this weekend.”
Union Rags is scheduled to breeze on Saturday. Rain in the forecast may force Matz to bump the work to Sunday or Monday.
