Verrazano made short work of the field he faced in the Pegasus Stakes (G3) at Monmouth Park on June 15 in a race that saw his main rival, Itsmyluckyday, eased on the backstretch by jockey Mike Smith.
Ridden by John Velazquez, Verrazano assumed command early after breaking from the inside post. Completing a soft opening quarter in :24.82, Verrazano led the parade into the backstretch
when he was confronted by a three wide itsmyluckyday. The charge from Itsmyluckyday was short lived, however, as Smith pulled up his mount and eased him out of the race. The outcome of the Pegasus was simply a formality at that point, and Verrazano cruised to the wire unchallenged.
In his first start since the Kentucky Derby (G1), Verrazano covered the 1 1/16 miles in 1:41.72 in defeating runner-up Reporting Star by 9 ¼ lengths. Verrazano races for Let’s Go Stables, Michael Tabor, Mrs. John Magnier and Derrick Smith and is trained by Todd Pletcher.
Jockey Mike Smith said in a Monmouth Park post, “Itsmyluckyday broke sharply but something felt off in his left hind leg. So, instead of taking any chances, I decided to err on the side of caution and pull the horse up.”
